Somerton Wharf, Deep Lock and Lock Cottage
The Oxford Canal reached Somerton in 1787. It runs between the river and the village, past the old wharf and on to Somerton Deep Lock and Lock Cottage, which still has no road to it.
An article on the canal at Somerton is being researched and written, and will be added here. If you have photographs, memories or papers about the canal, the wharf, the lock or the people who worked them, please use the form below.
In the meantime, you can read about Somerton Deep Lock, its bridge and Lock Cottage on our Listed Buildings page, the wharf on the Economic Life page, and the walk along the towpath to the lock on Visit Somerton.
Did you grow up in Somerton, or does this article bring back a memory? Do you spot something that needs correcting or adding? Rosemary Arnold and Della Paviour would love to hear from you.
